Bachelor of Science - Communications Major
Mass Media and Speech/Theatre
If you are considering majoring in communications, you can be sure that
this degree will improve your writing and oral communication
skills. Completing this degree will assist you as you seek a
career in writing, reporting, broadcasting, acting, publishing, as well
as many other related fields.
Component 1 - General Education Requirements
In order to keep your educational experience broad enough to deal with
the
reality of the real world marketplace, all students, regardless of
their major, are required to complete a series of General Education
Courses. These courses include:
- 6 hrs English Composition I & II
- 3 hrs Principles of Speech
- 3 hrs Philosophy or Modern Culture &
Christianity
- 2 hrs Fitness and Wellness
- 1 hr P.E. Activity or Varsity
Sport
- 3 hrs Math
- 4 hrs Science
- 3 hrs Personal Finance or Marriage & Family
- 2 hrs Computer Literacy
- 3 hrs History
- 3 hrs Psychology or Sociology
- 6 hrs Bible Survey Course I & II
- 3 hrs Old Testament Course
- 3 hrs New Testament Course
- 4 hrs Humanities
Component 2 - Choose Your
Emphasis
The Communications Major gives you the option of further focusing your
educational experience by allowing you to choose from two different
emphases.
Mass Media
The following courses are required for any student declaring an
emphasis in Mass Media:
- 3 hrs Introduction to Journalism
- 4 hrs Introduction to Mass Media
- 3 hrs Introduction to Broadcasting
- 3 hrs Interpersonal Communications
- 3 hrs Argumentation/Persuasion
- 3 hrs Newspaper I or Magazine I
- 2 hrs Basic Photography
- 3 hrs Radio Production
- 2 hrs Junior Project
- 3 hrs Television Production
- 3 hrs Senior Project
- 3 hrs Communications Practicum
You must also choose at least 10 hours from the following electives
- 3 hrs Creative Writing
- 3 hrs Feature Magazine Writing
- 3 hrs Ethics in Media
- 3 hrs Editing I, II, III
- 3 hrs Newspaper Production
- 3 hrs Magazine Production
- 3 hrs Advanced Professional Communication

Speech/Theatre
The following courses are required for any student declaring an
emphasis in Speech/Theatre:
- 3 hrs Acting I
- 3 hrs Introduction to Theatre
- 2 hrs Oral Interpretation
- 1 hrs Theatre Performance
- 4 hrs Musical Theatre Production
- 3 hrs Stagecraft I
- 2 hrs Introduction to Broadcasting
- 3 hrs Advanced Professional Communications
- 2 hrs Junior Project
- 3 hrs Argumentation/Persuasion
- 3 hrs Senior Project
- 3 hrs Play Readings
- 3 hrs Speech or Theatre Practicum
You must also choose at least 12 hours from the following electives
