Science and Math
at Central Christian College
Why Study Science and Math at a Christian
College?
I'm sure many times while struggling through some intense
mathematical equation or scientific formula you have said, “I don’t
know why I have to learn this; I will never use it in real life!”
Well, the truth is a basic understanding
of scientific method and of the broad fields of scientific knowledge
are
indispensable to an educated student, not to say anything about
graduate
studies and related careers.
It is through the study of science and math that the theories and
methods associated with the disciplines are understood both
theoretically and functionally, and the integrity of true science
within the context of the Christian ethic is discovered and
demonstrated.
Now, regardless of the rhetoric you may hear, science and math are
Christian endeavors. Take a moment to read through nearly any
scientific textbook (physics, biology, chemistry, genetics, astronomy,
thermodynamics, etc.) and
you will find that Christian-influenced mathematicians and scientists
contributed
much of the foundational research related to those
disciplines. In an article entitled, "Christianity and the
Birth of Science," Michael Bumbulis
relates that the following scientists were heavily influenced by
Christian
thought and culture:
- Louis Aggasiz (founder of glacial science)
- Charles Babbage (computers)
- Francis Bacon (father of the scientific method)
- Sir Charles Bell (mapping of the brain and nervous center)
- Robert Boyle (father of modern chemistry)
- Georges Cuvier (founder of comparative anatomy)
- John Dalton (father of modern atomic theory)
- Jean Henri Fabre (modern entomology)
- John Ambrose Fleming (modern electronics/inventor of the diode)
- James Joule (discoverer of the first law of thermodynamics)
- William Thomson Kelvin (clearly stated the second law of
thermodynamics)
- Johanes Kepler (discoverer of the laws of planetary movement)
- Carolus Linneaus (father of modern taxonomy)
- James Clerk Maxwell (formulated electromagnetic theory of light)
- Gregor Mendel (father of genetics)
- Isaac Newton (discoverer of the universal laws of gravitation)
- Blaise Pascal (probability studies and hydrostatistics)
- Louis Pasteur (germ theory)
If a Christian culture produced these individuals, what might a
Christian culture like Central Christian College do for you?
Some would try to separate science and Christianity, claiming the two
are
incompatible. Unfortunately, such a view can seriously undermine
what
science is really all about. It is our belief that science and
faith
can work together. Studying science and math at an institution
like
Central Christian College can help you discover that balance - the same
balance
that Newton enjoyed. He did not see his faith as an accessory to
his
science but integrated the two - giving praise to the Lord God.
Okay, So Why Study Science and Math at
Central
Christian College?
It is through the study of mathematics and science that
the student can catch
a glimpse of our incomprehensible God. Students of math and
science
at Central Christian College are on an incredible journey.
Together, they discover the extraordinary methods and structures used
by the Creator, as He sustains the created. This “Christian
worldview” is at the basis of all teaching at Central Christian
College.
Using the Bible as the source of all truth, students are encouraged to
evaluate scientific and mathematical theories and their impact upon the
world. And don’t think we just shy away from the tough issues
just because we are Christians. Subjects such as genetics,
conservation, chaos theory, and
evolution are wrestled with along with other theories and
methods.
You may think that being a smaller school, there is no way Central
Christian can really equip you for a career in the sciences.
Well, you might be
surprised. Sure, our school may not have a proton accelerator and
we
haven’t replicated any sheep or anything, but very few schools can
compare
with our personalized education. Let’s face it, science and math
are
hard enough without also having to face the reality of being one of
hundreds
of students sitting in a lecture hall trying to understand some complex
theory
and then not having a chance to ask any questions. That will not
happen
at Central Christian College. With an average class size of 15 -
20
students, you will have the chance to interact with your professor and
classmates.
Experiments are “hands-on,” even in your freshman year.
Central Christian College also boasts a museum collection of bird and
mammal study skins, skulls, seashells, and insects. Each
year, students are offered an opportunity to take part in our unique
field experience courses.
These experiences include an Ecology and Field Biology trip to the
Southwest and an Astronomy course.
So, why study the math or science at Central Christian College?
Well, that depends on what you want. If you are looking for a
college that will challenge you to integrate Christian principles
with scientific principles, and can equip you with the tools for a
successful career or further study, then Central Christian is for you!
