Biological/Environmental Sciences

The Bachelor of Liberal Studies Major - Biological/Environmental Sciences is a unique major.  It offers you the opportunity not only to develop skills related to Biological/Environmental Sciences, but you also get a chance to tailor your program based on your future plans.  It is a much more diverse major than traditional majors and can provide you with better preparation for continued studies or employment.  It is through this degree that you can learn how to make a career in the Biological/Environmental Sciences work in the real world.

How Does It Work?

As you look at the major, you will notice that there are three components, or steps, that allow you to specifically design your program according to your educational needs.  Let's look at each one separately.

Component 1 - General Education Requirements

To help keep your educational experience broad enough to deal with the reality of the real world marketplace, this degree requires that you complete a series of General Education Courses.  These courses include:

6 hrs    English Composition I & II
3 hrs    Principles of Speech
3 hrs    Philosophy or Modern Culture & Christianity
2 hrs    Fitness and Wellness
1 hr      P.E. Activity or Varsity Sport
3 hrs    Math
4 hrs    Science
3 hrs    Personal Finance or Marriage & Family
3 hrs    History
3 hrs    Psychology or Sociology
6 hrs    Bible Survey Course I & II
3 hrs    Old Testament Course
3 hrs    New Testament Course
4 hrs    Humanities

Component 2 - Biological/Environmental Sciences Track

The next step is to choose two educational tracks that will serve as the emphasis of your educational experience. Since you are reading this page, we will assume that your first track choice is Biological/Environmental Sciences.  As a part of this track, you will have the opportunity to take a wide variety of classes.  Not only will you study animal biology, plant biology and environmental biology, but you will have the opportunity to be involved in field trips and individual field research.  You will have access to a great collection of biological materials (bird and mammal study skins, skulls, insect and shell collections, etc.) that will add to your understanding of the complexity of creation.  Some of the classes you may be taking include:
 

Component 3 - Choose Your Second Track

Since this degree allows you to shape your program according to your specific needs, you will need to choose a second track. What do you want to do with your education in Biological/Environmental Sciences?    How you answer that question will determine what you choose as your second track. (Tracks in Recreation, Sports/Coaching, Exercise Science, or Sports Management)

Social Science Concentration
(Tracks in Psychology/Sociology, History/Political Science, Criminal Justice, Psychology or Sociology)
