Central Paves the Way for a New League of Legends

McPherson, Kansas – Central Christian College of Kansas is pleased to announce the addition of an Esports program beginning in fall 2019. The world of competitive online gaming has exploded over the last few years. It is estimated that the League of Legends World Championship was watched by over 200 million people worldwide, drawing even more viewers than the 2018 Super Bowl! Competitive video gaming is now a serious, money-making industry that is making its way into the world of college athletics.

Director of Athletics, Johnny Garvilla shared, “With over three hundred colleges and universities offering Esports clubs and intercollegiate teams throughout the United States, it is evident higher education institutions are embracing this sport. For a Christian institution like Central Christian College of Kansas, it provides a vast arena where the Gospel can be shared and lives impacted for Christ. We are excited that our Board and President have approved Esports as a new Life Sport & Activity within the CCCK Athletics Department.”

The upcoming varsity program is being spearheaded by some of Central’s brightest tech and gaming enthusiasts: Sports Information guru, J.D. Williams; and the computer savvy IT Services duo, Doug Vanderhoof and Brandon Terry. These individuals worked tirelessly to collect data and research about the world of Esports in order to make an informed, knowledgeable decision about what this addition would do for Central’s campus. After presenting their findings about the growth and opportunity Esports could bring, the Board voted this fall to move forward with their proposal.

President Lenny Favara lauded the addition, saying, “Ten years ago when Central Christian College of Kansas began to introduce E-learners to our campus, people thought we were crazy. In the end, we were right. Virtual learning is now a normal part of the academic structure. So, when I was asked about recognizing E-athletes & Esports, I said, “Why not”. Historically, innovation and creativity have always been a hallmark of this institution. Just watch, in ten years the mention of Esports will not even raise an eyebrow and Central Christian College of Kansas will once again have set the standard for others to follow.”

Central’s Esports program will consist of two varsity teams and will compete in two different games: League of Legends and Overwatch. They will become members of the National Association for Collegiate Esports (NACE), the organization that is leading the way in bringing varsity level Esports to colleges across the nation. The primary objective of this program is to focus on team-based competition and communication, while also providing new and innovative scholarship opportunities to talented students who are seeking the quality, Christian education that Central Christian College of Kansas has to offer.
