About the Speaker
Dr. Clarence Bence is currently Professor of Historical Theology at Indiana Wesleyan University. In 1999, he was also give the task of developing and coordinating the teaching of a new course for all 620 first-year students. "Becoming World Changers" is designed to teach students the basics of the Christian faith and assist them in using their university learning to address the challenges of modern society.

Dr. Bence spent his childhood in upstate New York, where his father pastored a Wesleyan Church and served as District Superintendent. After studies at Houghton College and Asbury Seminary, Bud pastored a Wesleyan Church in Rochester, New York, where he developed a large youth program and church open to the "Jesus Movement" of the early 1970's. After five years of pastoring, he entered the doctoral program at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where his studies centered on an in-depth analysis of the theology of John Wesley.

For the past 20 years, Dr. Bence has devoted himself to teaching in Wesleyan colleges -- first at United Wesleyan College in Allentown, then at Indiana Wesleyan University (since 1982). He did take five years out to serve as Academic Dean at Houghton College, but since 1992 he has been the church history professor at IWU.

He has authored a commentary, Romans, in a multi-volume series produced by Wesley Press. For hobbies, he enjoys carpentry and gardening.

Bud's wife, Carol, is also a faculty member at Indiana Wesleyan in the Nursing Division. They have three children -- two daughters and a son, Ryan, who is currently a student at Indiana Wesleyan University.

The Wesley Lecture Series
The Wesley Lecture Series was established in 1999 and occurs each fall on the Central Christian College campus.  This one day event allows excellent scholars who have special knowledge of John and Charles Wesley to bring a series of lectures to Central Christian College students, as well as many in ministry from the surrounding area..  Endowed by Mr. and Mrs. John Landrum of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, this series compliments the many activities and events sponsored and planned by the Ministry program at Central.
