Finding outside scholarships is a large task.

In fact, many businesses and organizations offer aid to a wide variety of students. Here are some helpful hints and helpful resources when looking for outside aid.

Watch out for Scholarship Scams

Beware of scholarship scams.  The first rule of thumb is that you should never have to pay money for an organization or an individual to find scholarships for you.  According to the Federal Trade Commission, if you hear these lines from a scholarship service, you may be getting scamed:

"The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back"
"You can't get this information anywhere else"
"I just need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship"
"We'll do all the work for you"
"The scholarship will cost money"
"You've been selected" by a "national foundation" to receive a scholarship
"You're a finalist" in a contest you never entered

Where can I find legitimate outside scholarships?

We have seen the majority of outside scholarship aid come from local communities through either high schools, churches, booster clubs, or other businesses and organizations.  We encourage you to talk with your high school guidance office.  They will often have information regarding local scholarships.

You may also look for outside aid nationally.  There are scholarship books located in almost every library.  We suggest the following outside scholarship searches on the web.  All of the following organizations are a trusted and reliable resource for students looking for outside aid.
