Water Well Project 2008

Spreading the Living Water... One well at a time.
Mission:  To provide a water well for Mbitini Emmanuel Children’s Home in Mbitini, Kenya

The need:  Mbitini Emmanuel Children’s Home currently serves 47 orphans by providing housing, education, food, and water in a Christ-centered atmosphere.  While the area has many other children who lack homes, the orphanage does not have the means to take them in because it lacks access to a sufficient water source.  This area has been severely affected by drought, and the shallow wells have run dry.  A well there must be drilled to 250 feet, a project costing approximately $25,000.  These children are in desperate need of help if they are to survive.

What can I do?

Think about this:

  • Your bathroom: One flush of the toilet uses the same amount of water that a person in an underdeveloped nation uses all day for cooking, cleaning, and drinking. (www.awid.org)
  • Your wasted food:  It takes 1,000 tons of water to grow one ton of wheat. (Plan B 3.0, Lester Brown)
  • Your daily chores:  The average distance that women in Africa and Asia walk to collect water is 3.75 miles (www.awid.org).  This can require as much as 85 percent of the daily energy of these women (www.unhabitat.org).
  • Your location:  Over one billion people (17 percent of the world’s population) lack access to clean water.  Of these, more than a quarter live in sub-Saharan Africa. (World Health Organization)
  • Your life span:  Every year, 12 million people die due to a lack of clean water. (World Health Organization)
  • Your education:  Since daily chores require fetching water, girls are often unable to attend school.  Education improves in area where water is available.  (U.N. World Water Development Report)
  • Your finances:  A well in Africa generally costs $1,500-$4,000 to build, but it can cost up to $30,000 depending on depth and location of the well.  (www.clearblueproject.org)
  • Additionally:  Modern wells in Africa are typically anywhere from 26 feet to 115 feet, but many of these are unable to withstand the dry seasons.  These can serve from 100-600 people. (World Health Organization)
