Tigers Upset #13 Southwestern
Tigers upset the #13 Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions in a thrilling OT home victory. Tigers played an excellent game on offense and defense, never showing quit and taking on any adversity throughout the game. Tigers take this thriller of a basketball game 99-94 over the Lions.
Many of the Tigers would step up tonight at the right times during the duration of the game. The Starters would get themselves in a hole to begin the game and the bench players would get them back into the game. Torrey Henry one of the heroes of tonight, arguably hit two of most important 3 pointers in his career after struggling in the first half. TJ Williams would have a big night scoring 20 points and fueling the offense to stay in the game. Dominque O’Connor would have a big night as well scoring 13 points, and also would have a scary moment in the game when he went down on the floor. This seemed to put a spark in the players to have even more of a reason to win, this win was for the Ambush!
Tigers would shoot 43% from the floor going 35-for-81 and 34.4% beyond the arc cashing in 11 3’s on the night. Tigers would go from not going to the line at all in the first half to going to the line 24 times in the 2nd half and OT. After a shaky start at the charity stripe the Tigers would start to clutch it up when the game was winding down and the game on the line. This game would be full of excitement having 16 lead changes, with the Tigers coming out on top.
Coach Romero had this to say on the night:
“I am so happy for our guys tonight. Big win for our group. It has been a roller coaster year for our team, playing in the toughest conference in the country is a difficult task every night out. We have competed and came up short a lot of times and a lot of teams may pack it in at this point in the season or have a pity party for themselves. Our guys have continued to show up in practice and willing to learn from past mistakes. We were pretty tough on them the other night after a close loss to Texas Wesleyan and credit to our guys, they responded yesterday in practice, this morning in shootaround and in the game tonight.”
“SAGU is one of the best and hottest teams in the country with probably the best player in the country. We played with a lot of passion and commitment on both sides of the ball. We responded time and time again, different guys making plays at different moments. I’m especially proud of Torrey Henry, he has struggled recently and has never wavered from his consistent work ethic and he came up huge for us in huge moments towards the end of regulation and overtime. We will enjoy this one this weekend and get back at it for senior week next week!”
