Train Derailment Near Campus Central Christian College of Kansas

A Union Pacific train derailed southwest of campus , early Sunday morning, March 12, 2023. The derailment caused a small grass fire, which was quickly controlled by the local fire department. A small leak of denatured alcohol was detected, but there is currently no threat to the campus or the local community. Campus officials remain in contact with local, regional, and state authorities.

At this time, the campus is still open for normal operations, including Kids Kampus. For those set to visit campus over the next several days, avoid I-135 exit 58, as that route may not provide direct access to campus. Main Street, south of Kids Kampus, will remain closed until the train is clear.

The campus community appreciates the rapid response by McPherson first responders including, McPherson Fire Department, McPherson EMS, McPherson County Sherriff’s Office, McPherson Emergency Management, and the McPherson Police Department. “We are blessed to live and operate in a community with such an efficient and effective early response team” says, Central Christian College of Kansas President Lenny Favara “We also appreciate the support provided through Senator Moran’s Office. His office was one of the first to reach out and make sure we were okay.”

Students and members of the local community are encouraged to maintain their distance, providing the space and time needed to address the situation. The College will provide updates as necessary.
